Birmingham-Southern College students to offer up duo operas

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern College students, faculty and staff are producing and performing two different operas jointly in a spring theatrical production at the college.

The two operas, titled “The Consul” and “The Telephone,” will perform on April 18 at 7:30 p.m. and April 20 at 2:30 p.m. in the BSC College Theatre Mainstage.

“The Consul,” by Gian Carlo Menotti, will feature in lead roles BSC junior Timothy Beenken from Vestavia and Karen Young, a BSC graduate music student from Huntsville.

“The Telephone,” a one act that tells the story of two lovers and their inability to connect because of the phone, will feature BSC freshman Stefan Neely from Madison and junior Shelby Bowling from Mobile.

Both pieces include a company of faculty, staff and students as cast and crew members, along with guest conductor J. Lynn Thompson who spent 27 years as director of orchestral studies at North Atlanta School of the Arts and 27 seasons as artistic/music director of Atlanta Lyric Theatre. Thompson will return to The Ohio Light Opera in May for his 20th season as music director/principal conductor. He has recorded 16 full length productions with OLO on the Albany and Newport Classics labels.

Mildred Allen, professor of music at BSC, is directing both operas.
