Birmingham-Southern organ professor to present spooky faculty recital
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern College professor of music and organist James Cook will present a faculty recital Oct. 31 in the BSC Hill Recital Hall at 9 p.m.
His Organ Spooktacular, being performed for the second consecutive year, will include performances by BSC organ students, a duet with BSC First Lady and violist/violinist Karen Bentley Pollick, a sing-a-long featuring Pumpkin Carols associated with the “Peanuts” cartoons, and a pantomime of a bizarre wedding on the recital hall stage performed by BSC faculty and students.
BSC organ students performing in the Halloween concert are Richard Byrd, a senior church music major from Mountain Brook; Jack Heath, a junior biological chemistry major from Opelika; Meagan Langford, a junior music major from Hueytown; Kenny Lewis, a freshman music major from Mount Olive; Patrick Scott, a senior music major from Picayune, Miss.; and David Talley, a junior undecided major from Pleasant Grove.
Featured performance pieces include “Toccata” and “Fugue in D Minor” by J.S. Bach; “Wedding March” from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by Felix Mendelssohn and arranged for organ by Robert Arnold; the “Devil’s Trill” sonata by Guiseppe Tartini; “Solace” by Scott Joplin; “Tu es Petra” by Henri Mulet; and “Toccata from Symphony No. 5” by Charles Marie Widor.
Performers will appear in costume. The recital is open to the public. Admission is free.
