Book by two Birmingham-Southern students nominated for award by historical association

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.— “Panthers on the Gridiron: Football at Birmingham-Southern,” a book co-authored by Birmingham-Southern College students Ben Lewellyn and Peter Starr, has been nominated for the 2008 Clinton Jackson Coley Award given by the Alabama Historical Association.

The 28-page book chronicles the history of football at Birmingham-Southern from its inception at the college's parent institutions (Southern University in Greensboro and Birmingham College) to its last season in 1939.

Lewellyn, a senior history major from Hoover, and Starr, a junior international studies major from Atlanta, spent the entire 2006 spring term collaborating on the book as a contracted class with BSC faculty Guy Hubbs, associate professor of library science and archivist, and Mark Lester, professor of history. They spent the summer fine tuning their work in anticipation of its release when football returned to the college this fall.

The prestigious Clinton Jackson Coley Award is given bi-annually by the Alabama Historical Association to a publication focusing on local historical concerns published within the last year. The winner will be announced at the organization's annual meeting in April
