Birmingham-Southern First Lady to perform in Sept. 5 concert with Russian pianist and Louisiana State University cello professor

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern College First Lady and violinist/violist Karen Bentley Pollick will perform with Russian pianist and composer Ivan Sokolov at a Sept. 5 concert along with guest performer Cellist and LSU Professor Dennis Parker in the BSC Hill Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m.

The concert, titled “Seeing through Sound: Compositions by Ivan Sokolov,” will be followed by a reception in the lobby of the recital hall.

The concert will include selections from “amberwood,” a CD recorded by Pollick and Sokolov in Birmingham in March 2007 and released July 31. It is comprised of duo compositions for violin/viola and piano by Sokolov, Jan Vičar and Ole Saxe and includes Sokolov's Solnechnaya Sonata, a rewarding addition to the classical violin/viola and piano duo repertoire.

The new recording also includes the “Tango Orientale for Viola and Piano” by Saxe, a Swedish composer, and “Uspávanky/Lullabies” by Vičar.

Copies of “amberwood” will be available to purchase during the post-concert reception through the BSC Bookstore. Pollick and Sokolov will be on hand to autograph CDs.
