Birmingham-Southern College signs the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, announces Earth Week activities

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern President Dr. David Pollick has signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment as a charter signatory to the pledge to become climate neutral, making BSC the only institution of higher education in the state to join the effort. Organizers of the initiative seek the commitment of 200 college and university presidents by June 2007.

To further promote and exhibit environmental awareness, the college will host a number of events in recognition of Earth Week, concluding with observance of Earth Day on April 22.

The BSC Conservancy, which is the only environmental student organization on campus, is hosting the daily events. The group, which is dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and advocacy across the campus and throughout the community, will present displays on various issues daily from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Norton Campus Center Atrium.

Highlights of daily topics, as well special events planned for the week, are as follows:

Monday, April 16 – Energy Reduction Day: The BSC Conservancy will distribute compact fluorescent bulbs, along with related information; The movie “Kilowatt Hours” will show in the Norton Campus Center Theater at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday, April 17 – Recycling Awareness Day: Elizabeth Scribner will speak on community redevelopment and greening in Stephens Science Center, Room 130 at 4 p.m.

Wednesday, April 18 – Alabama Water Issues Day: Nelson Brook and Mark Martin of Black Warrior Riverkeeper will speak on the Alabama Water Agenda in the BSC Southern Environmental Center at 6 p.m.

Thursday, April 19 – Global Warming Awareness Day: The movie “An Inconvenient Truth” will show in the Norton Campus Center Theater at 5 p.m.

Friday, April 20 – Reduce Your Personal Impact Day: Greenfest will take place on the residence hall quad from 1-4 p.m. It will offer organic food, music, Frisbee play, and prizes.

Saturday, April 21 – Pre-Earth Day Celebration: A fun, family event to encourage participation in local environmental groups and to educate children on how to improve the environment, co-sponsored by Mountain High Outfitters and Whole Foods Market, among others, at Crestline Park in Mountain Brook from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The BSC Conservancy will host a kids' section with free food and games.
