Birmingham-Southern organist professor to present faculty recital

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern College Organist Professor James Cook will present a faculty recital Feb. 25 in the BSC Hill Recital Hall at 2:30 p.m.

His concert, entitled “The Organ as Cover Band,” is one of a series of programs he has designed to feature specific repertories of organ music. It consists of music originally written for other instruments, but arranged for organ by a number of composers.

The only original composition for organ on the program is a movement from Bach's Pastorale. Cook will be joined on guitar by BSC adjunct professor of music Karlo Senasi on this piece.

Other works on the program include an arrangement of Vivaldi concerto, transcriptions of piano works by Brahms and Rubinstein, a dance from Tchaikovsky's “Nutcracker,” and the Introduction to the Third Act of Wagner's “Lohengrin.” The performance will be accompanied by slides showing the organs for which the music was written and portraits of the composers.
