Award-winning Birmingham-Southern students to perform with local orchestra

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Three student winners of the seventh annual Whittington Competition at Birmingham-Southern College will perform with the Red Mountain Chamber Orchestra Feb. 18 in the college's Hill Recital Hall at 3 p.m.

The orchestra, to be led by BSC Music Professor Dr. Thomas Gibbs, will accompany the 2007 Whittington Competition winners, who are vocalist Shelby Claire Bowling, a sophomore vocal performance major from Mobile; pianist Bonnie McClure, a senior music major from Fortson, Ga.; and vocalist John-Mark McGaha, a junior vocal performance major from Birmingham.

The Whittington Competition is named for Frances and Dorsey Whittington, who were leaders of The Birmingham Conservatory of Music which later became the Music Department at Birmingham-Southern.
