BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern College dance, music, and theatre students will bring Engelbert Humperdinck's opera “Hansel and Gretel” to the stage April 21 at 7:30 p.m. and April 23 at 4:30 p.m. in the College Theatre, Mainstage.
A BSC student cast of 16 will perform the opera, based on Grimms' classic fairytale, accompanied by members of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Joseph Hugh Thomas Professor of Music Dr. Lester Seigel.
Erin Wakeman of Mobile will portray Gretel, and Jessica Rushing of Semmes will play the role of Hansel. Other students in the opera cast include John-Mark McGaha of Pratt City as the Father; Emily Knighton of Dothan as the Mother; Sarah Schiesz of Florence as the Witch; Shelby Bowling of Mobile as the Sandman; and Mary Elizabeth Neal of Albertville as the Dew Fairy.
“The production is really going to be beautiful visually, especially the gingerbread house,” comments Mildred Allen, BSC professor of music who is serving as stage director of the opera. “The clothing also will stand out. Patti Manning [BSC costumer] has done a wonderful job with her design.”
