BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Concert Choir of Birmingham-Southern College will present a program anchored around a variety of choral Psalm settings March 22-24 and March 26-27 at four churches in Athens, Ga., Atlanta, Ga., Charleston, S.C., Columbia, S.C. and Macon, Ga.
The performance will include Psalm settings in Hebrew by Israeli composer Tzvi Avni, J. S. Bach's motet Lobet den Herren (Psalm 117), Psalm 90 by the path breaking American composer Charles Ives, and a setting of Psalm 121 by the exciting young American composer and BSC Assistant Professor of Music Dorothy Hindman. Other selections on the program include works by colonial-era composer William Billings and African-American spiritual arrangements of texts from the Hebrew scriptures.
The 38-voice undergraduate choir, under the direction of BSC Associate Professor of Music Lester Seigel, was warmly praised by “The Birmingham News” for its fall performance of Beethoven's Choral Fantasy with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.
