Birmingham-Southern announces 2006 spring/summer calendar of events

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.— Birmingham-Southern College announces its schedule of 2006 spring/summer major events. Please refer to the listed phone numbers should you need more information. Admission is free to all events unless otherwise noted. Sports schedules for men's and women's competition can be viewed by visiting www.bscsports.net. The college's spring/summer events include:

April 6 BSC Concert Choir Homecoming Concert . Hill Recital Hall, 7 p.m. Call 205/226-4950.

April 7-8 14th Annual Latin American Studies Symposium . Featuring keynote speaker Jeffrey Cohen, associate professor of anthropology, Ohio State University, speaking on his latest book “The Culture of Migration in Southern Mexico,” and his new research funded by “National Geographic” on the cultural significance and nutritional value of chapulines (grasshoppers) in Mexico. April 12 Nick Kotz Lecture . The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist will speak on his new book “Judgment Days: Lyndon Baines Johnson, Martin Luther King Jr., and the Laws that Changed America.” Norton Campus Center Theatre, 4 p.m. Call 205/226-7826.

April 17 Foreign Film Series: “The Pianist .” A 2002 film directed by Roman Polanski about a Polish Jewish musician's struggle to survive destruction of a Warsaw ghetto during World War II. Norton Campus Center Theatre, 7 p.m. Call 205/226-4658.

April 21 Livable Cities Conference . The annual conference sponsored by the college's Southern Environmental Center will feature a panel discussion on environmental justice. Hill Recital Hall. Times to be announced. Call 205/226-7740.

April 21&23 “Hansel and Gretel” opera production. Based on Grimm's famous fairy tale, it tells of two children who foil the plot of the wicked witch to turn them into gingerbread, saving the other children from a similar fate. The beloved lyrical melodies of this classic have inspired generations of opera-goers. This full-length production features BSC students and members of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. April 25N.E. Miles Judaic Studies and Middle Eastern Culture Lecture. A Holocaust Remembrance Day lecture will be presented by Deborah Lipstadt, director of the Rabbi Donald A. Tam Institute for Judaic Studies and Dorot Professor of Modern Judaic Studies at Emory University and author of “History on Trial: My Day in Court with David Irving (2005).” Bruno Great Hall, Norton Campus Center, 7:30 p.m. A Yom Ha Shoah – Holocaust Remembrance Service with Rabbi Hausman-Weiss will immediately precede the lecture in the Bruno Great Hall, Norton Campus Center, at 7 p.m. Call 205/226-4921.

April 28-30 “Marley, Being a Ghost Story of Christmas.” Freely adapted from “A Christmas Carol, in Prose Being a Ghost Story of Christmas,” by Charles Page Dickens. A celebration of the creation of this new musical by one of BSC's senior theatre majors. Presented in a limited run and with modest production values, a new take on the most classic of all Christmas stories. College Theatre, Theatre One.
