BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Class celebrations and a mini-college and luncheon featuring alumni speakers are among the events available to alumni when they return to the Birmingham-Southern College campus April 29-May 1 for Alumni Reunion Weekend 2005.
This year's reunion honors the BSC classes of 1945, 1950, 1955, 1960, 1965, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, and 2000, but is open to all alumni and their families.
Friday, April 29, events include gatherings for the classes of 1945, 1950, and 1960; campus tours; a president's reception for reunion honor classes and guests; and a spring student dance performance; among other activities.
A Saturday, April 30, Alumni Mini-College will feature BSC alumni speakers Ulysses “Skip” Bennett of Arlington, Texas, a 1967 graduate and financial planner; Norton Dill and Anne Wheeler of Birmingham, 1968 and 1969 graduates and documentary producers; Rebecca Gilman of Chicago, Ill., a 1987 graduate and award-winning playwright; Thomas Ogletree of Guilford, Conn., a 1955 graduate and Yale theologian; and Charles Gaines of Trussville, a 1964 graduate and author/screenwriter. Earlier in the day, award-winning career journalist and 1958 graduate Don Brown of Tuscaloosa will be discussing and signing Forward, Ever:Birmingham-Southern College at its Sesquicentennial, the college's new hardbound book, which will be for sale. Awards for distinguished alumni and outstanding young alumni will be announced at the annual alumni reunion luncheon for all classes and guests.
Also on Saturday, there will be a BSC vs. Liberty University softball game, a show at Robert R. Meyer Planetarium, fraternity and sorority open houses, open houses at the Southern Environmental Center and EcoScape on campus, and showings of the documentaries Kathryn: Story of a Teller and Music in their Bones. Selected class parties will be Saturday night at various locations throughout Birmingham.
