BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern College Chancellor Dr. Neal R. Berte was presented with the Outstanding Service Award at the 19th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Breakfast Jan. 17 in downtown Birmingham.
Berte was recognized for his 29 years of service to Birmingham-Southern College, along with his contributions to the community and state, including his service as co-chair of the 16th Street Baptist Church Stabilization Campaign Steering Committee.
Berte retired as president of Birmingham-Southern in June 2004 but continues as chancellor of the college. An Ohio native, he holds three degrees from the University of Cincinnati, where he was elected Phi Beta Kappa.
