BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—A Birmingham-Southern
College senior and a recent
graduate have been selected by the national Rotary Foundation to
receive its
prestigious 2003-04 Rotary Scholarship for overseas cultural study.
Anna Donaldson of Jasper and Sara Doughton of Homewood each were awarded a
Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship for one year of international study.
The Rotary Scholarships are sponsored by local Rotary Clubs based
on written proposals students present to a scholarship committee.
The scholarships, which
reach up to $23,000, are intended to further international understanding
and friendly relations among people of different countries. Donaldson
and Doughton
will receive their overseas assignments in December. Upon return to the United
States, each will speak at Rotary Club gatherings to share their overseas
experiences.
Donaldson, who graduated cum laude with
a bachelor's degree in English
in May
2003, will pursue a master's degree in communications as part of her
Rotary
experience. Her Birmingham-Southern activities and honors included Triangle
Service Club, Ivy League campus tour guide, President's Student Service
Organization, and Dean's List. An accomplished pianist, Donaldson is
a
five-time winner of the Alabama Music Teacher Association's annual
competition, and, in 1999, she appeared on Good Morning America with Diane
Sawyer as Alabama's newly crowned Junior Miss. She currently is working
as a
communications intern at ABC News in Boston. She is the daughter of Jeff
and Brenda Donaldson.
Doughton is an English major and the daughter of Ralph and Susan
Doughton. Her campus affiliations and interests include editor
of the Compass leadership
journal, Mortar Board, vice president of the Honor Council, Alpha Omicron
Pi sorority, secretary of Omicron Delta Kappa honorary society,
and Writing
Center tutor.
The Rotary Foundation offers three types of scholarships: Rotary
Ambassadorial Scholarships for one year of post-graduate and cultural
study,
Rotary Cultural Scholarships for three months of overseas study, and
Multi-Year Rotary Scholarships for two or more years of international study
and exchange. Over the past decade, 27 Birmingham-Southern students have become
Rotary
Scholars.
