FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 12, 2003
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern College’s Interim
at Woodlawn program has been selected as Innovation of the Week
by the Leader to Leader Institute for the week of Sept. 10-16.
The program was featured on the organization’s website at
www.pfdf.org.
The Interim at Woodlawn is a concentrated one-month course each
January that gives students the opportunity to serve while learning
in the Woodlawn community
of Birmingham. Students live part of the time in a local church and work
at nonprofit agencies serving the area.
Some examples of student-led service projects
that have resulted from the Interim at Woodlawn program are tutoring
at Gate City
Elementary School, organizing
a Martin Luther King Day celebration, working in a teen mothers’ childcare
center and tutoring at Woodlawn High School, assisting patients in a health
clinic, working at the Woodlawn Business Association, performing gardening
and maintenance at the Woodlawn Ecoscape, and renovating substandard housing
through Outreach Inc.
The Leader to Leader Institute (formerly
the Drucker Foundation) seeks to strengthen the leadership of
the “social sector” by providing educational
opportunities and resources to leaders
