FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 8, 2003
BIRMINGHAM, ALA.—Birmingham-Southern College was recently
included among the 100 “Colleges Worth Considering” as
compiled by Washington Post staff writer Jay Mathews.
The list of “hidden gems” was compiled by Mathews based on an informal
survey of high school counselors and teachers who were asked to submit information
on schools that “their graduates rave about” and that are “under-appreciated.”
In his April 1, 2003, “Colleges Worth Considering” article, Mathews
quoted Mary Ann Willis, college counselor at Bayside Academy in Daphne, as
saying about Birmingham-Southern, “The president knows the students
by name and remembers them for years. They have strong pre-professional programs
and solid support for the arts.”
The appendix of Mathews' book Harvard
Schmarvard: Getting Beyond the Ivy League to the College That
Is Best for You contains the complete survey,
including longer descriptions of each of the 100 schools on the list.
