BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—John Perry, distinguished
professor of music at the University of Southern California, will
conduct a master class on the Birmingham-Southern College campus
Saturday, Feb. 8.
The public class will begin at 10 a.m. in the
Hill Recital Hall. Admission is free.
Perry, who has an international reputation as
an outstanding piano teacher, has had a number of his students win
major competitions including the Rubinstein, the Naumburg, national
Chopin competition, and the Beethoven Foundation competition.
Perry's appearance is part of the Birmingham-Southern
Hugh and Barbara Thomas Master Class Series designed to have famous
artists visit the campus and mentor students for a day.
“We bring master artists to the campus
each year in four areas of music: instrumental performance, vocal
performance, piano performance, and composition,” said Dr.
Lester Seigel, chair of BSC's Division of Fine and Performing
Arts.
The Master Class Series honors the late Hugh
Thomas, professor emeritus at Birmingham-Southern, and his late
wife, Barbara, a former BSC piano instructor.
