BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern
College dance team, the 'Southern Stars, will participate
in the Universal Dance Association's National Competition
in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 9-12, 2003.
The competition will be televised nationally
on ESPN and ESPN2 and will be the first national dance competition
of any kind for the 'Southern Stars.
The dancers, coached by Kristen Wear, earned
blue ribbons during the summer for their first-place finish at the
small-school division competition for colleges with less than 10,000
students in enrollment. The team was extended an at-large bid to
the national competition after the group submitted a videotape to
the UDA for consideration.
The 'Southern Stars dance team is made
up of 10 students who entertain at home basketball games and special
events to enhance and promote school spirit.
