Birmingham-Southern College dance team to go to national competition

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern College dance team, the 'Southern Stars, will participate in the Universal Dance Association's National Competition in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 9-12, 2003.

The competition will be televised nationally on ESPN and ESPN2 and will be the first national dance competition of any kind for the 'Southern Stars.

The dancers, coached by Kristen Wear, earned blue ribbons during the summer for their first-place finish at the small-school division competition for colleges with less than 10,000 students in enrollment. The team was extended an at-large bid to the national competition after the group submitted a videotape to the UDA for consideration.

The 'Southern Stars dance team is made up of 10 students who entertain at home basketball games and special events to enhance and promote school spirit.
