BIRMINGHAM, Ala.Birmingham-Southern
College is among 22 private colleges and universities nationwide
named as a "Best Buy" in The Fiske Guide to Colleges
2002.
In all, a total of 43 private and public
institutions were cited for the "quality of the academic
offerings in relation to the cost of attendance."

"In the face of today's skyrocketing
tuition rates, students and families in all economic circumstances
are looking for ways to get the best value for their education
dollar," wrote the guide's editors. "Fortunately,
there are some bargains to be found in higher education .
. . institutions that offer remarkable educational opportunities
at a relatively modest cost."
Among the institutions included as "Best
Buys" are Baylor University, Brigham Young University,
Centre College, Rice University, Stetson University, Trinity
University, and University of Richmond.
The Fiske Guide to Colleges is an
annual publication designed as an information resource for
college-bound students and their parents. According to the Fiske
Guide, this year's edition includes descriptive essays
on some 300 of the country's "best and most interesting" colleges
and universities that college-bound students most want to
know about. Special emphasis is placed on academic quality
in the selection of colleges and universities for inclusion. |

Essays in the 743-page guide focus on an
institution's academics, campus setting, student body, financial
aid, housing, food, social life, and extracurricular activities.
The Fiske Guide is edited by Edward
B. Fiske, former education editor of The New York Times.
Birmingham-Southern College receives consistently
high rankings as one of America's top national liberal arts
colleges. The institution began its 146th academic year last
August with the largest class of first-year students in school
history.
