BIRMINGHAM, Ala.Four student winners of
the second annual Whittington Competition at Birmingham-Southern
College will perform with the Red Mountain Chamber Orchestra on
Sunday, February 17, at 3 p.m. in BSC's Hill Recital Hall.
The orchestra, led by BSC Music Professor Thomas
Gibbs, will accompany the 2001 Whittington Competition winners,
including pianist Myron Brown, a freshman piano major from Birmingham;
and baritones Nathanael Gunter, a junior voice major from Tuscaloosa;
Daniel Seigel, a senior theatre major from Birmingham; and Joshua
South, a senior voice major from Irondale.
The Whittington Competition is named for Frances
and Dorsey Whittington, who were leaders of The Birmingham Conservatory
of Music which later became the Music Department at Birmingham-Southern.
Judges for the Whittington Competition held in
December were Suzanne Beaudry, president of the Red Mountain Chamber
Orchestra; Frances Schwemmer, independent piano teacher; and Monica
Zerbe, assistant professor of music at the University of Montevallo.
