Award-winning Birmingham-Southern students to perform with Red Mountain Chamber Orchestra

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Four student winners of the second annual Whittington Competition at Birmingham-Southern College will perform with the Red Mountain Chamber Orchestra on Sunday, February 17, at 3 p.m. in BSC's Hill Recital Hall.

The orchestra, led by BSC Music Professor Thomas Gibbs, will accompany the 2001 Whittington Competition winners, including pianist Myron Brown, a freshman piano major from Birmingham; and baritones Nathanael Gunter, a junior voice major from Tuscaloosa; Daniel Seigel, a senior theatre major from Birmingham; and Joshua South, a senior voice major from Irondale.

The Whittington Competition is named for Frances and Dorsey Whittington, who were leaders of The Birmingham Conservatory of Music which later became the Music Department at Birmingham-Southern.

Judges for the Whittington Competition held in December were Suzanne Beaudry, president of the Red Mountain Chamber Orchestra; Frances Schwemmer, independent piano teacher; and Monica Zerbe, assistant professor of music at the University of Montevallo.
