Information for Students
Information for Students
There are many opportunities and responsibilities for candidates for graduation. Detailed information is sent throughout the senior year, so please check your BSC e-mail and campus mailbox regularly to avoid missing out on any important instructions. Birmingham-Southern wants to make sure that your graduation is an experience that you and your family will remember for a lifetime!
Here are some of the main instructions:
Application for Degree
You must fill out an Application for Degree Form with the Office of Academic Records before the beginning of the term in which you expect to complete your degree requirements. Failure to do so may result in a delay in the conferring of your degree.
Students who establish a grade point average of 3.50 during their academic careers are graduated cum laude; those who establish a grade point average of 3.75 are graduated magna cum laude; and those with a grade point average of 3.90 are graduated summa cum laude.
Students should attend the Commencement Expo in the Norton Campus Center on April 3 and 4 from 11:00AM – 5:00PM. You may pick up your cap and gown, be photographed in them, complete your financial requirements, check your accounts, and more.
A fee is charged to each applicant for any degree to cover the cost of the student's diploma and academic regalia and will be added to the bill for the last term of residence.
You must confirm your participation and guest attendance at key senior events by filling out this form between March 5 and April 2. Before you complete the form, please have an estimate of how many guests will be attending Honors Day, Baccalaureate, Capping, and Commencement. Note that only Commencement requires ticketing, but your confirmation is still required for all events for planning purposes.
You will need to fulfill your requirement for Lecture and Arts events; complete student loan exit counseling online, if applicable; return all library books and pay any fines; and ensure your account is cleared and no balance remains. This printable checklist provides deadlines and contact information for such tasks. In addition, courses with incomplete grades of I or O must be completed in time for grades to be submitted to the Records Office by May 6. If you cannot meet this deadline, contact Keith Karriker at firstname.lastname@example.org or (205) 226-4699.
Caps, gowns, invitations, and more
The Commencement Expo is the place to pick up your cap and gown for Commencement Weekend and Honors Day. You may also order a diploma frame, embossed invitations, certificates, and your official college ring.
Village Photographers will photograph every graduate as they cross the stage and receive their diploma. A posed individual photo will also be taken of each graduate as they exit the stage. Free proofs of these photos will be sent by mail and e-mail to graduates and their families within one week of the ceremony. Print packages start at under $10; however, there is no obligation to buy.
To ensure that Village Photographers has the correct address information, please go to www.villagephotographers.com and click the blue “Sign up for Graduation Proofs” button. For additional information, contact Village Photographers at 334-821-9196 or at email@example.com.
Candidates for graduation should report to the main entrance of the College Theatre no later than 8:15 a.m. on the morning of the Commencement Ceremony. Cards will be given out with instructions for the line of march. You will present your card to the Provost as you step onto the stage. In the event of inclement weather, check-in will take place in the Sports Center gymnasium. Candidates will be directed to line up in the tunnel between the gymnasium and the coliseum.
