Department of Physical Fitness and Recreation

Introduction

Participation in the activities and events scheduled, promoted, and administered by the Department of Physical Fitness and Recreation will prove to be beneficial to everyone on campus. All students, faculty members, and staff members are invited to take part in any of the programs offered. It is hoped that through this participation, everyone will develop qualities of leadership, cooperation, self-reliance, and a sense of fair play, as well as form friendships that will endure throughout the years.Larry D. Philosophy and Objectives

The primary purpose of the department of physical fitness and recreation is to provide optimal recreation and fitness opportunities for the college's students, faculty members, and staff members. The goals of the department are:

The Department of Physical Fitness and Recreation includes the following features:

Administration

The administration and general operation of the Department of Physical Fitness and Recreation is the responsibility of the director of physical fitness and recreation. The department is a part of the Office of Student Development and reports to the vice-president for student development. The department also works closely with many other departments on campus and is available to assist in any way that is needed.

The Department of Physical Fitness and Recreation oversees the following areas and welcomes any comments or suggestions that will help provide improved or better programming or service:

  • Intramural Sports: During the academic year, “team” sports are offered and individual sports tournaments are held. In addition to the regular sports, several special events are usually held each semester.
  • Fitness Programs: Through the generosity of the SGA, three classes per week are offered in aerobics and two classes per week are offered in yoga. In addition to these classes, Dr. Andy Gannon, associate professor in biology, instructs two martial arts classes per week.
  • Southern Outdoor Recreation: Several outdoor recreation activities and events are scheduled per year.
  • BSC Ropes Course: The department schedules and maintains the ropes course, which is a great leadership and team-building resource.
