Mentor Program

Students Interacting With Alumni

In the context of the BSC Mentor Program, mentoring serves to supplement the knowledge students have acquired through coursework and to provide them a valuable opportunity to benefit from the experience of a professional in a particular area of interest. Mentoring is an experiential learning experience that involves an exchange of ideas and information to equip and empower students to identify and affirm their career and life goals. Mentoring has been described as personal and professional coaching that one adult (the mentor) provides to another, less experienced adult or protégé (the mentee). Through the mentoring process, students have the opportunity to not only learn firsthand about their field of interest, but also gain insight regarding their personal growth and maturity.

Mentors, too, benefit from the mentoring process. It provides them a vehicle by which to share, contribute, and give back in a meaningful way. They gain great satisfaction in knowing they have had a positive impact on the development of an ambitious and determined student who is eager to learn and striving to succeed in his or her career. Mentors are often credited as a major influence and motivating factor in the lives of future professionals. We are grateful to our BSC alumni, business partners, and community friends for agreeing to serve as mentors to our current BSC student mentees.

Tips for Student Mentees

The BSC Career Services Office, in partnership with the BSC Alumni Affairs Office, pairs student mentees with alumni and community mentors. Every effort is made to ensure an appropriate and conducive fit for the mentor/mentee relationship. Pairings are made based on the mutual career interests of both parties.

Mentors in Other Cities

If you are a current BSC student or a recently graduated BSC student, and you find yourself in another city or state, and are unfamiliar with the area, it might be helpful for you to know you have friends you can call upon to guide you. If you are in a new place and want to know how to get around, contact a BSC alum for advice. BSC alumni live in many of the major metro areas throughout the country and are more than willing to lend a hand to a visiting BSC grad. Through a partnership between BSC Career Services and BSC Alumni Affairs, a continuously growing list of alumni contacts in other cities is being developed for your use.

Invitation to Participate

Mentors are role models, informal teachers, trainers or tutors providing personal and professional insights to an eager learner, apprentice, or protégé. A mentor can be defined as "a trusted guide” or "a wise, loyal advisor or coach." They have the opportunity to influence the professional development of a student mentee who is seeking advice and guidance. We invite BSC alumni and community partners to volunteer to be a mentor. Submit your application.

A mentee is a serious-minded, career-oriented student who is eager to learn more about his or her career field. A mentee is a novice, trainee or protégé who is paired with a more experienced practitioner, teacher or mentor. We invite BSC students to become mentees. Submit your application.
