Some recently asked questions and their answers:
What do most universities or colleges look for on an application?
First of all, the following is required at BSC:
- Application
- Fee of $40
- Personal Statement
- Counselor Recommendation
- Transcript with ACT/SAT scores
- Résumé
We want to make sure that BSC is the best fit for you, so all of these components are very important. We are looking for someone who can do the required work, but who also wants to be challenged in the classroom, and involved outside the classroom.
Your résumé should reflect your activities and honors from the 9th–12th grades, and your personal statement is an opportunity for you to tell the Admission Office more about yourself beyond what we can find on your transcript.
In addition to the required recommendation from your high school guidance counselor, you may also include a recommendation from a teacher or someone from the community. You are not limited in the number of recommendations you include with your application.
Does BSC offer many research opportunities?
Yes, BSC students work with faculty on their research projects. And, they often co-author papers and even make presentations at national conferences. We believe these experiences are crucial to being admitted to the best graduate and professional schools.
What is it like living in Birmingham?
Birmingham is a cool place and we know you will love it. The college is only a couple of miles from downtown and the very popular Southside entertainment district. But there are also several major shopping malls and centers, great food, and tons of cultural and outdoor activities!
How’s the food on campus?
Our Food Court was just renovated last year, and now offers so much variety. Subway, KFC, and the daily pasta bar are favorites. But there’s also the pizza station, the home cooked meal station, the grill, and more. Check out www.bscdining.com.
I don’t see the major I’m interested in listed on the Web site? What are my options?
In many cases, the faculty will work with you to help you design your own course of study.
I just don’t think I can afford coming to school at BSC. Who can help?
You will be surprised how affordable it is to get a BSC education. Check out the Financial Aid link on this site to see what a bargain it is. Or e-mail our Financial Aid Office at finaid@bsc.edu.
