Current Professional Activities

Presently serving on the Board of Directors of the Union Pacific Corporation, the Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold Corporation and the Aston Villa Football Club (UK). Committee memberships include the Audit Committee, the Finance Committee, the Personnel Committee and the Public Policy Committee.

Appointed by the Secretary of Defense to the Board of Regents of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. This University serves as the Medical School for the Armed Forces of the United States.

Has served as Co-Chairman of the Founders Group of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation since July 1999. Currently leads the capital campaign for the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Raised $150M to date. Built, equipped, and staffed Phase I of the Museum.

Vice Chairman with overall responsibility for Corporate Development and Acquisitions, Personnel and Education, for a Fortune 500 Company employing 28,000 people in five countries and 20 locations. Key accomplishments include:

  • leading the acquisition of four companies as part of a corporate diversification strategy.
  • negotiating the first joint venture with a foreign bank.
  • successfully acquiring over $6B in loans.
  • providing leadership to ensure consistent and fair personnel policies and employee benefits, resulting in recognition of MBNA in Fortune Magazine as a “Great Place to Work”.
  • developing and initiating a leadership identification and education program designed to enhance the effectiveness and leadership capabilities of the senior management team.

MBNA Europe Bank Ltd, Chester, United Kingdom

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Profit and loss responsibility for the third largest credit card provider in the United Kingdom and the largest credit card provider in the Republic of Ireland.

  • Doubled net income during tenure.
  • More than doubled outstanding loans.
  • Increased the number of managed accounts from 3.2M to 8.4M.
  • Led the global expansion of the company into Spain, MBNA’s first entry into a non-English speaking country.
  • Developed and executed a long-range facility master plan that resulted in the addition of 607,500 square feet of business operating space.
  • Created an environment that resulted in MBNA Europe’s consistent recognition as a “Great Place to Work” by the Sunday Times (London) and the Irish Independent (Dublin).

Appointed by the President of the United States to serve on and subsequently Chair the board that examines the morale, discipline, curriculum, faculty, athletic programs and admissions policy at the United States Naval Academy.

United States Marine Corps

Thirty-five years as an accomplished leader experienced in every facet of military strategy and operations. Recognized for demonstrated intellect, prescience, and effectiveness in the national defense and geo-political arenas. Key positions / accomplishments include:

General, 31st Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps
 Jun 1995 – Jul 1999

Served as the senior leader of the U.S. Marine Corps and a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, with overall responsibility for recruiting, training, operational readiness, and welfare of more than 220,000 active and reserve forces and 20,000 civilian employees.

  • Increased USMC share of the Department of Defense budget by $1.5B or more each year, thereby initiating a modernization effort that continues to benefit our troops today in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • Instituted the Marine Corps War Fighting Laboratory, a research and development organization that developed war fighting innovations currently employed by Army and Marine forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • Fathered the concepts of the “Three Block War” and “The Strategic Corporal.” These concepts are being executed today in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • Lengthened and strengthened recruit training to better prepare Marines for the asymmetric warfare of the 21st century.
  • Strengthened the bond between the U.S. Marine Corps and other fighting forces around the world. Traveled more than 750,000 miles as a representative of the United States and the Department of Defense.
  • Developed the Chemical Biological Incident Response Force to meet terrorist challenges within the United States.

Lieutenant General, Commanding General, Marine Forces Pacific, Camp H. M. Smith, HI
Jul 1994 – Jun 1995

Operational commander of the largest theater of operations for the United States Marine Corps. Responsible for more than 75,000 Marine and Sailors stationed ashore and afloat from California to Southeast Asia. Represented the U.S. in several key bilateral and multilateral negotiations with Australia, Thailand, Japan and Korea.

Commanded the organization responsible for developing Marine Corps war fighting concepts and determining capabilities to enable the Marine Corps to field combat-ready forces.

  • Established the Marine Corps’ concepts-based requirements system, a developmental process that ensures all military requirements are evaluated against valid military operational concepts.
  • Led the development of the operational requirements for the Marine Corps’ major unique combat systems: MV-22 tilt rotor aircraft, advanced amphibious assault vehicle and landing platform dock amphibious ship.

Brigadier General, Director, USMC Force Structure Planning Group
Sep 1991 – Nov 1991

Selected by the Marine Corps’ senior leadership to develop, coordinate and publish the strategic vision for the U.S. Marine Corps in the 21st century. Subsequently tasked with the reorganization and restructuring of the U.S. Marine Corps, reducing active duty military personnel structure by 22,000 (11%) without degrading capabilities.

Brigadier General, Commanding General, 2d Force Service Support Group, Camp Lejeune, NC
Jun 1989 – Jul 1991

Commanded the largest combat logistics support unit in the Atlantic theater. Oversight of 15,000 Marines and Sailors stationed or deployed from the eastern United States to the Persian Gulf. Provided logistical support to all Marine forces during Operation Desert Storm and oversight of the retrograde of combat equipment back to the U.S. after the war.

Coordinated the military support for the Commander in Chief (Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush).

  • Support included communications, aircraft, ground transportation and secure facilities, and the budget authorizations to support those activities.
  • Supported key Presidential activities to include meetings with heads of state.

Married to Zandra Krulak for 47 years.
Two sons:

  • David: Graduated from Rice University. Entered the US Navy as a nuclear power submarine officer. Subsequently attended the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and became a doctor in the Navy.
  • Todd: Graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Ph.d in Religious Studies. Currently teaching at Tulane University.

Excellent health.
Hobbies include reading, writing, public speaking, physical fitness, grandchildren.
