A Message from the President

Dr. David Pollick

Welcome to Birmingham-Southern College and our Web site.

As a four-year, private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church, Birmingham-Southern has a long and rich history as one of the nation’s most recognized liberal arts colleges. For nearly 150 years, this institution has been preparing young men and women for bright and productive futures.

Our mission is to provide a liberal arts education of distinctive quality—one that challenges our students to think independently, to examine the arts and sciences aesthetically and critically, and to communicate clearly. We accomplish this mission through offering educational experiences that prepare students to be lifelong and participatory learners and leaders, to be active and successful in their careers and communities, and to be individuals who better understand and shape the world around them.

Throughout our Web site, you will find out more about this distinctive liberal arts educational experience that is recognized as one of the best in the nation. You will read about a small college with a 12-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio that allows for personal attention for the students, but that is located in a thriving urban setting; about an almost “new” campus where every classroom is “wired” for instruction; and about the state’s oldest Phi Beta Kappa chapter. You will learn about an innovative Interim term where students concentrate on one area of interest from Birmingham to the Caribbean to New York to New Zealand; about vibrant Service Learning and Leadership Studies programs; and about five bachelor’s degrees in more than 56 programs of study, including interdisciplinary and individualized majors and two master’s degree programs. You will find out about 14 national sororities and fraternities, and more than 80 other social, honorary, and special interest groups that offer our students additional opportunities to develop the total self. You will find out about the value of a Birmingham-Southern degree as told through the lives and careers of our graduates, plus much more.
