The Norton Board

Mission Statement

The mission of the Norton Board is to:

  • connect the College to the community, its people, and its needs,

  • connect the community to the College, its students, and its mission,

  • combine the academic, liberal arts experience with practical impacts in the real world, and

  • provide a conduit to prepare and mentor students for engagement, service, and leadership.

History

The Norton Board of Advisors was established in 1974 to honor the memory of Edward Lee Norton by providing in perpetuity a forum for mixing the academic and theoretical wisdom of the College with the practical advice of the Birmingham business and professional community. At first a small group of business professionals to mentor a fledgling business program, the Norton Board has matured as a larger and more representative body.

In the Fall of 1989, Birmingham-Southern College reorganized its Edward Lee Norton Board of Advisors for Management and Professional Education. Doctors, lawyers, business men and women, government, service - - all segments of the community - - now come on a regular basis to hear about every segment of College life and to respond to the needs of the College's most important constituency, its students.

Student needs define the organization and activities of the Norton Board. The Board is now over 175 strong representing public, private, and nonprofit sectors, and is committed to mentoring and preparing our students for their contributions to our ever changing world.
