Department Chair: Professor Alan Litsey
The Birmingham-Southern College theatre program emphasizes that production skills are best learned by active participation in the classroom and on the stage. With equal importance placed on learning and doing, our students are well-prepared for continuing graduate work and for careers in professional and educational theatre. Students are active in production throughout their four years, with freshman encouraged to become involved as soon as they arrive on campus.
The Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre and the Bachelor of Arts degree in musical theatre include a wide variety of courses, from Beginning Acting, Make-Up, and Set Design to Directing, Stage Movement, and Voice & Diction. Classes are provided both for the student approaching theatre as a topic of general interest and for those intending to make a career in the performing arts.
Upon completion of the Theatre Arts major, students will be able to
- Perform acting goals and tactics
- Execute theatre designs using appropriate technology
- Function successfully as a member of an ensemble
Upon completion of the Musical Theatre major, students will be able to

- Execute theatre designs using appropriate technology
- Function successfully as a member of an ensemble
