Study Abroad - The Journey
The notion of a journey is different from that of a trip—or even the idea of travel, since it is entirely possible to travel without taking on the mental, emotional, and social development that a journey implies. A journey indicates a process, a process of personal growth—and the reality that one's own inner landscape is as exciting and changeable as the external sights of a foreign land.
The Sklenar Center encourages you to think of your study abroad as a journey, inward and outward, to be experienced in stages. You will notice that this handbook takes you through the experience stage by stage. Stage 1 is Thinking and Applying; this section of the handbook includes information about opportunities for international study and instructions for completing your Study Abroad Profile. Complete this phase nine months ahead of the academic term you want to study abroad. Once you have decided where you want to go and what you want to do, and have completed your application, you will be ready for Stage 2, Preparing for your journey. Stage 3 is Going, which is of course your literal journey abroad, but each stage is a journey in itself, exciting and challenging and rewarding in its own ways. Once you've been away from the familiar for a time, Stage 4, Returning, can also seem a bit like visiting a foreign country, so we've included some information for this important part of your experience as well. Many students enjoy their study abroad experiences so much that they return to BSC ready to engage in another such experience, so Stage 5 is Going Again.
Welcome to the beginning of your journey abroad!
