Post-Graduate Opportunities Abroad

Birmingham-Southern believes that students' international education should not end when they graduate. The OIP encourages students to take advantage of the following scholarships/fellowships and teaching

opportunities after graduation. Many of these opportunities offer substantial funding but have an early deadline often in the Junior or Senior years, so be sure to apply early. The Career Counseling Center also supports students in applying for graduate programs and post-graduate employment, both domestically and abroad. Unless otherwise noted, the Office of International Programs is the contact point for all scholarships and programs listed below.

Scholarships and Fellowships

  • British Marshall : The British Marshall Scholarship is a scholarship designed to finance a minimum of two years study leading to a graduate degree in the United Kingdom. Candidates must have a GPA of 3.7 or higher.

  • Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Junior Fellows Program : The Junior Fellows Program at the Carnegie Endowment is designed to provide a substantive work experience for graduating college students who have a serious career interest in the area of international affairs. Up to twelve students across the nation are selected to work at the Endowment on a full-time basis for a period of one year.

  • Fulbright Fellowship : The Fulbright Hayes Program gives graduating seniors opportunities for personal development and international experience through project grants and teaching assistantships after graduation. Applicants plan their own programs, which must be completed in one country for no more than one academic year abroad. Projects may include university coursework, independent library or field research, classes in a music conservatory or art school, special projects in the social or life sciences, or a combination. Students may also apply for teaching assistantships in countries all over the world. Information about such programs, the application process and the BSC deadlines and requirements can be found on the Fulbright Web site: www.fulbrightonline.org .   • Rhodes Scholar Program : Each year, graduating seniors have the opportunity to apply for a Rhodes scholarship to study at Oxford University for a two-year term with the possibility of extending study for a third year. This award covers all tuition fees and provides a generous stipend for both years of study in England.

  • Rotary Scholarships : Every year, a number of BSC students successfully apply to Rotary scholarships that provide funding for a full academic year of study at a foreign institution. This award allows students to pursue graduate programs overseas. In many cases, award winners are able to earn a master’s degree based on classes taken under this scholarship.

  • Blakemore Asian Language Fellowships : These grants fund a year of advanced language study at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama, Japan, the International Chinese Language Program at National Taiwan University in Taipei, the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing and other approved programs in Southeast Asia. Blakemore Freeman Fellowships are available to American citizens and permanent residents of the United States who have a college degree and who plan to use an Asian language in their career.   • British Council – Funding for Graduate and Professional Study : This Scholarship Database is the only place on the web that lists scholarships just for US citizens who want to do a full degree in the UK.   • George J. Mitchell Scholarships : The US-Ireland Alliance sponsors a competitive, national scholarship for graduate study by American citizens between the ages of 18 and 30 at institutions of higher learning on the island of Ireland. Named to honor the former U.S. Senator's pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, the George J. Mitchell Scholarships are intended to familiarize and connect the next generation of American leadership with the island of Ireland. These Scholarships support one year of graduate study in any discipline offered by an institution of higher learning in Ireland or Northern Ireland. Scholars must be enrolled in a degree or certificate program offered at the institution. The Mitchell Scholarship provides tuition, housing, a living expenses stipend, and international travel. Normally, 12 Scholarships are awarded each year. Mitchell Scholars must exhibit superior records of academic excellence, leadership and public service.   • NSEP David L. Boren Graduate Fellowships : The National Security Education Program (NSEP) enables U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. Boren Fellowships support students pursuing the study of languages, cultures, and world regions that are critical to U.S. national security but are less frequently studied by U.S. graduate students (i.e., areas of the world other than Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand), and who are highly motivated by the opportunity to work in the federal government.   • UK 9/11 Scholarship Fund : The United Kingdom 9/11 Scholarships Fund gives awards to study in the United Kingdom to children or dependants of victims of the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. The scholarships cover funding for full-time study leading to a degree at Master’s level (or equivalent in further education) in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.   • US Department of State: The State Department offers a number of fellowships domestically and abroad for work and study in the areas of international affairs, diplomacy, public policy, and related fields. Teaching Opportunities

  • Guest Lecturer Position in SZEKESFEHERVAR, HUNGARY: The one-year lectureship at Kodolanyi Janos University College is a unique experience offered to select graduates of Birmingham-Southern College. As an instructor of Conversational English the junior-faculty member works directly with a local secondary school, under the sponsorship of Kodolanyi. English-teaching experience is useful but not required. Students turn in their applications by mid-April of the senior year are then interviewed on-campus for the position(s) for the following academic year.   • JET : The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme invites university graduates from overseas to participate in international exchange and foreign language education throughout Japan. The programme offers university graduates the opportunity to serve in local government organizations as well as public and private junior and senior high schools. Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree in any subject by July of the year of departure. Applications are due at the end of November.   • Fulbright Teaching Fellowship: The Fulbright Hayes Program gives graduating seniors opportunities for personal development and international experience through project grants and teaching assistantships after graduation. The grants for English teaching assistantships are offered for many countries in all regions of the world. Applications are available in May and are due in October.   • Ambassade de France aux Etats-Unis : The French Ministry of Education offers English assistantship posts in French schools to American citizens with a major or minor in French.   • EPIK English program in Korea : EPIK, sponsored by the Korean government, invites foreign university graduates to enrich their lives and build a professional teaching career while sharing knowledge and culture with students and teachers throughout the Republic of Korea. The English Language Instructors (ELIs) teach English in the school system, train Korean English teachers, and assist Provincial Offices of Education (POEs).   • Teach in China : Anshan Normal University in northern China has faculty positions open for teaching English to Chinese university students. BSC graduates are encouraged to apply. For more information, please contact Anne Ledvina at 226-7722.

  • CETP (Central European Teaching Program) : Through Beloit College, BSC graduates can be placed to teach conservational English in a School in Central Europe. For more information check out the Web site www.ticon.net/~cetp/.

  • WorldTeach : Teach and volunteer for a year or summer in a developing country. WorldTeach offers opportunities to teach English or another subject full-time in many countries. Check out the Web site at www.worldteach.org.
