Programs

The Department of Music provides music education and training within a liberal arts context; all courses, whether taken by majors or by other students, are designed to help students increase their enjoyment of and ability to create music.

The department offers four distinctive degrees:

  • A Bachelor of Arts with a major or minor in music, designed for students who wish to study music in a broad liberal-arts context.

  • A Bachelor of Music with a major in performance , designed for those students considering careers in music performance or teaching; requires an audition sophomore year. Students in this program major in either vocal or instrumental performance with a concentration in their instrument.

  • A Bachelor of Musical Arts (BMA), a music-intensive degree for students who wish to connect their musical studies with another academic area.

  • A Bachelor of Music Education (BME), a pre-professional program designed for students who wish to combine intensive music training with the courses and teaching experiences needed for certification for primary and secondary teaching careers. BME students concentrate in either vocal/choral music education or instrumental music education.
