The Conservatory

The Birmingham-Southern College Conservatory of Fine and Performing Arts celebrated its 115th anniversary in 2010. The Conservatory has a long tradition of excellence and makes available to students of all ages the same opportunities in the arts that are available to college students at Birmingham-Southern.

With a long history of outstanding directors and faculty members too numerous to name, the Conservatory has placed itself in the forefront of music education in this area and throughout the Southeast. At its beginning in 1895, there were only three faculty members, Mr. Benjamin Guckenberger, the founder of the Conservatory, his wife and a violin instructor. Today, the Conservatory boasts of over 20 faculty and over 300 students.

With several different satellite locations throughout the Birmingham area, the Conservatory is able to provide quality instruction to students in their own communities.

The quality of the faculty is one of the reasons the Conservatory has earned such an outstanding reputation through the years. Most faculty members hold masters degrees and some hold doctorates. The dedication of these faculty members help to make the Conservatory a special place for the students.

If you or your child are not already a student at the Conservatory, we invite you to join us this year. You can become a part of the proud tradition at the Birmingham-Southern College Conservatory of Fine and Performing Arts.
