rise3 Internships

rise3 Internships

All internships provide valuable practical experience. A rise3 internship is the ultimate experiential learning opportunity, helping students understand themselves and their place in the world.

What makes up a rise3 internship?

Pairing an on-the-job experience of intensity and depth with a process of critical reflection, a rise3 internship project helps students:

  • Connect their hands-on experience to their academic knowledge;
  • Explore the relationship between their experience and their values, skills, and aspirations; and
  • Analyze the relationship between their experience and the public interests of the broader community.

In addition to providing real-world experience, a rise3 internship helps students channel that experience into lives of significance.

Many rise3 internships are part of designated courses. However, under the guidance of a faculty sponsor (required for all rise3 experiences) students can contract their own rise3 internship projects.

Examples of rise3 internship projects

HI E299 Internships for Historians
Students serve as public history interns in libraries, archives, museums, living history sites, and other facilities in the Birmingham area. Participants are placed according to talent, interest, and availability. All have the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge they've learned as historians at BSC and to explore career possibilities for engaging with history outside of the classroom.

BA 397 Business Internships
This course provides an academic framework around an internship in business. Students interview for and are selected to complete an internship at a company where they will work for a minimum of 130 hours during the semester. The critical reflection component helps develop students as ethically aware, learned professionals who strive for integrated lives of significance.
