Challenge Yourself

Birmingham-Southern’s challenging, high-quality academic curriculum prepares our graduates to do just about anything they want to do.

That’s the beauty of a liberal arts education. Ours is one of distinctive quality that will challenge you to think independently, to examine the arts and sciences aesthetically and critically, and to communicate clearly.

Academic Program

In BSC’s 4-1-4 academic calendar, students enroll in four classes in the fall semester, one during the January Interim Term, and four in the spring. The college currently offers five bachelor’s degrees in more than 50 programs of study, as well as interdisciplinary and specially individualized majors and dual degree programs.

Foundations Curriculum

The Foundations curriculum expands the liberal arts mission to address the talents and skills students will need to be successful in an increasingly complex and technological society. Among the curriculum’s key elements are required First-Year Foundations courses that build intellectual and academic community among first-year students.

Faculty

More than 96 percent of faculty members hold a doctorate or highest degree in their field. The low 12-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio allows for personal interaction between student and professor in the classroom and beyond.

Honors Program

With its small classes, interdisciplinary courses, innovative curriculum, and more, Birmingham-Southern is indeed an “honors college.” But within this honors college, is an Honors Program that extends the boundaries of learning even further with opportunities such as specially-designed courses just for Honors students, preferred registration, special lectures, scholarships, access to the best advisors, honors housing, and many other benefits

Other Special Programs

The academic program at BSC is complemented by opportunities that give students a wealth of life experiences out of the classroom, such as the expanding Study Abroad program, the January Interim Term where students concentrate on one area of interest from Birmingham to Zimbabwe to Italy, Service-Learning projects in the local community as well as across the country and overseas, and a Leadership Studies program that pushes students to take intellectual and social responsibility. Other opportunities include internships and mentorships, undergraduate research, and Foreign Languages Across the Curriculum.

Academic Resource Center

The college’s Academic Resource Center is a multi-faceted approach to academic assistance that enhances the support services available to students. The ARC includes speech and writing centers and foreign language and math labs among other areas.
