What Honors Program Students are Saying
"As a senior, I realize that there are just some classes that you remember more than others. There are classes that taught you to explore areas you had never even thought of studying, and there are classes where you do not only learn, but learn how to THINK. It is in those environments where you learn not only the facts, but WHY the facts matter, and HOW they receive real life application. In turn, those classes are often the most challenging, but certainly prove the most valuable. For me, the Honors Program classes I have taken are those landmarks in my studies at BSC."
Sunday Vanderver, Senior
“Even though I just started the Honors program and the International Film II class, I know the Honors program will open my eyes to many opportunities and experiences that I would not normally be exposed to. The Honors program allows me to interact with and learn from others in an environment where everyone is excited about gaining every bit of intellect they can get their hands on. I look forward to future experiences in the Honors program here at 'Southern as well as the promising future the Honors Program promotes after graduation.”
Brittany Bross, First-Year Student
“The courses I have taken in the Honors Program have opened my eyes to a whole new field of studies. It has required me to develop new viewpoints from which to view the world, and it has made me a better critical thinker.”
Joe Cox, First-Year Student
"The Honors courses I've taken thus far have all stimulated and challenged my intellectual thought process, something I have yet to experience in my regular classes."
Elina Kukuy, Sophomore
"The Honors Program developed in me an interdisciplinary mindset that I use to process the issues of a complex world."
Wes Kelley, Sophomore, Co-Chair Honors Program Council
“I was thinking the other day, actually, that I am glad I'm taking Honors classes because two of them--Community and Creativity--have articulated half-formed thoughts and questions I've had myself about global issues such as the nature of the welfare state and the thinking processes of our most creative people. Furthermore, they've disclosed far more information than I would have been able to distill by myself, and Worldwide Impressionism has given me an in-depth springboard on music, art, and literature in one time period that I've used to understand and remember other periods of the arts. Most importantly, I say all this with sincerity and none of that silly, empty sentimental stuff they fill brochures with.”
Rosalynn Fairless, Sophomore
"The Honors Program is an integral part of the superior learning process proudly offered by Birmingham-Southern featuring the most exciting and interesting classes on campus."
Jennifer Osland, Sophomore
"The honors classes that I have taken have been both challenging and enjoyable. My favorite class was called 'Frankenstein meets Snow White,' and in it we studied different forms of literature. The small class size (only about 10 students) facilitated discussion and the two professors encouraged participation from the entire group. Overall, the Honors Program has offered me a chance to take a broad range of courses that I would have missed out on otherwise."
Kim Bell, Senior
"As a freshman in the Honors Program, I've been able to take courses dealing with topics such as Impressionism and creativity, courses which would otherwise not be open to first-year students."
Martin Landry, First-Year Student
"Honors Program courses allow you to explore topics like religion, literature, and creativity from whole a new perspective by looking at each topic in relation to other disciplines. The discussions I have had and the revelations I have made in my Honors classes have continued to have an impact on me long after the last day of class."
