Woodlawn High School Tutoring Program:
“Colonels of Hope”
The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
Eleanor Roosevelt
What is it?
The Woodlawn High School Service Learning project is an ongoing
volunteer program, in which students from Birmingham-Southern help
prepare students at Woodlawn High School for the high school graduation
exam, ACT, and AP history exam. Students from Birmingham-Southern
will be sent to Woodlawn High School to tutor a group of students
in one of the following subjects: math, English, science, reading,
or history.
Woodlawn HS
Who is the client?
Students who have not yet passed a certain section of the Alabama graduation exam as well as students in AP history and students taking the ACT. While we cannot tutor every student at Woodlawn who needs our help, we can better prepare a number of students for passing the graduation exam, and, hopefully, give them the option to pursue college.
What do I need to have?
- a general knowledge of the subject you will be tutoring. However, material will be provided so it is not imperative that you have great knowledge in your subject.
- patience
- a means of transportation to get to Woodlawn High School. It is about 10-15 minutes away.
- the desire to improve the situation of students coming from Woodlawn High School.
How much time does it take?
Usually, tutors volunteer one hour a week to spend at Woodlawn High School. However, if you so choose, you may spend more time than that tutoring.
When is it?
This is almost completely up to you. Woodlawn High School is very willing to work around the schedules of BSC students. Anytime you have an open hour between 8:30-3:30 is usually perfect. For the exit exam, the AP test, and the ACT tutors will tutor from 3:30-5:00.
