What is First Light?

“First Light’s mission is working with homeless women, their children, and others at risk to create hospitality in a safe and nurturing community, encouraging guests to maintain dignity, find hope, seek opportunity, and grow spiritually, thereby achieving their full potential.” Taken from First Light website.

Who is the client?

Homeless women, sometimes with their children. Many of the women at this shelter do not qualify for job training programs. Many are elderly or chronically mentally ill.

What do I need to have?

• Transportation to the shelter.
• Food that the Food Court prepares for you.
• Kind, caring concern.

How much time does it take?

Meet behind the KFC stand in the Food Court at 4:45 to pick up food. We will carpool to First Light and arrive by 5:15. You will have the opportunity to visit with First Light’s clients for about forty-five minutes, then serve dinner.  You will usually be back on campus by 7:00 pm.

When is it?

Birmingham-Southern College students are responsible for going on Wednesday nights.

What if…

I'm running late?

Let one of the coordinators know so they will know to wait for you before leaving campus.

I know ahead of time that I have a test and can't make it on my designated day?

Call other people on the Women's Shelter list to see if someone can cover for you.

Something comes up and I can't do my shift that day?

Try to contact one of the student coordinators so they know not to wait for you.

I decide I don't want to do Women's Shelter anymore?

Inform our office (4720) and share the reasons with us. We will use the information to improve the program.
