Student Leaders in Service
June 17-22, 2012
Student Leaders in Service is a week-long residential program for high school students who will be juniors or seniors in the 2012-2013 academic school year. The program will provide opportunities to learn about leadership, community engagement, and active citizenship through community service, simulations, seminars, and discussions, while giving students a taste of college life.
Lead: Practice, theorize, and reflect on the purposes, aims, and methods of leadership.
Serve: Participate in community service across Birmingham: work with children, the environment, the working poor and others in need.
Explore BSC: Participate in classroom exercises with Birmingham-Southern College faculty and community partners, discover the campus, meet current students, and spend five nights in a BSC residence hall.
Student Leaders in Service Activities:
- Low ropes course and team-building exercises
- Personality self-assessment and communication skills sessions
- Introductory classes on leadership and service, led by BSC professors
- Sessions with local community and nonprofit leaders
- Service-learning projects with BSC community partners such as Urban Kids Summer Program, Habitat for Humanity, and Turkey Creek Nature Preserve
- Off-campus outings to explore Birmingham, including local restaurants, a tour of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, and hiking at Ruffner Mountain Nature Center
