By Stanley Hollingsworth
Please join Birmingham-Southern College as the Opera Theatre and Theatre programs present two one-act
operas: Ralph Vaughn Williams’
Riders to the Sea
and Stanley Hollingsworth’s
The Mother
Riders to the Sea
is a beautifully scored and heart-wrenching drama considered to be one of Ralph Vaughn
Williams’ finest theatrical works. Based on John Millington Synge’s play and set on one of the Aran Islands off
the West Coast of Ireland at the turn of the 20
century, it tells the story of an Irish family’s struggle against
the unforgiving forces of the sea.
The Mother
brings us a fantastical drama of a woman struggling to find her dying son. During her search,
which is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s tale,
The Story of a Mother,
she encounters the allegorical
characters Night, Blackthorn, Lake, and, eventually, Death. Stanley Hollingsworth was a protégé of Gian-Carlo
Menotti, and his score contains delightful melodies, a rich harmonic sound palette, and vivid orchestrations.
