Lecture and Arts Events

Lecture and Arts Events

Lecture and Arts Events encourage students to explore diverse perspectives, ideas, and experiences through performances, talks, and other presentations. Lecture and Arts events are open to the College and surrounding community and include significant artistic or intellectual content related to academic programs and/or relevant to the institutional mission. The College Catalog indicates that programs are limited to Provost’s Forums, visual and performing arts events, and approved speakers. L&A credit may not be earned for events in which a student is a participant.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Navigate to the myBSC dropdown menu, select Ginkgo GO
  • Login with your BSC username and password and press the Submit button.

  • To ensure the security of your data, remember to logout and exit the system.

How many Lecture and Arts Events do I need to attend?

Prior to graduation, students must attend at least 24 Lecture and Arts Events, an average of 6 per year. Course registration priority is based on class standing and the number of Lecture and Arts events attended. Students can monitor the number of events completed in Ginkgo GO.

What if I’m a transfer student?

Incoming transfer students are credited with three Lecture and Arts Events for each term attended prior to enrolling at Birmingham-Southern College, up to a maximum of twelve.

What if I’m studying abroad?

Students studying abroad are considered Transient Students and therefore receive three credits for each regular term completed abroad.

What if I’m just a few events shy at the end of my senior year? Will I be granted an exception so that I can graduate as planned?

No. Students will not graduate or be able to participate in graduation ceremonies if they do not complete this requirement.

How do I get credit for attending Lecture and Arts Events?

Students earn one L&A credit for each Lecture and Arts event they attend. To receive credit, students must register their attendance at the event. To ensure timely registration, students should arrive promptly and stay until the conclusion of the event. Registration at both entrance and exit is required for most events. Students may not earn additional credit for attending multiple performances of the same event.

Before entering the event, check with the event organizer/staff member for directions to accurately record your attendance. L&A ID's, sign-in sheets, and/or QR codes may be used to record student attendance.

Signing in, using your L&A ID, or scanning the QR Codes verifies that the specific student identified has attended the full presentation; misrepresenting attendance will be considered a BSC Honor Code violation. To register your attendance, follow the relevant instructions for the specific event:

  • When L&A IDs are being used, log in to Ginkgo GO and select L&A ID from the menu. This will open a page with your name, photo, and a QR code that will be scanned at the door. For faster processing, take a screenshot of your ID to save it for future use.
  • When sign-in sheets are being used, print your full name and student id clearly so that attendance can be accurately recorded.
  • When QR codes are being used, scan the code, and then log in using your BSC username and password. When you submit your login information, you will receive a Record Updated message indicating your L&A attendance has been recorded. QR Codes are time sensitive and only valid during the event time. When scanning a QR Code beyond the programmed event time, you may receive error codes stating the event has not yet started, the event has not yet ended, or the code has expired.

How do I check my Lecture and Arts attendance record?

Students can check their attendance record on Ginkgo GO. Please allow up to one week for the credit to appear.

  • From myBSC dropdown menu at the top of the BSC website, select Ginkgo GO .
  • Login using your BSC username and password and press the Submit button.
  • From the menu, select Lec & Arts Attended events.
  • To ensure the security of your data, remember to select logout and exit the system.

Students should monitor their attendance record. Please report any errors to Amanda Coshatt, [email protected], within 10 days of attending the event to get credit.
