How to Register for Exploration Term First-Year Students

First-year Students

First-year students should fill out preference forms listing their top four choices of Exploration Term projects. They will be placed in their projects and registered by the Office of Exploration Term and Contract Learning.

1. See your advisor for Registration instructions on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at the Common Hour.
2. Submit your Online Preference Form no later than midnight, Monday, October 8..
3. The Office of Exploration Term and Contract Learning will register you for the course in which you have been placed. You may change courses, subject to project capacity, at any time between the end of upper division registration and Monday, January 7, 2013.
4. All projects meet for Exploration Term orientation on Thursday, November 15, at the Common Hour.
5. On Thursday, January 3, 2013, all projects meet at 1:00 p.m.

Upper-Division Students

Students are expected to register for only one Exploration Term project during the month of January and to be involved with that project for at least thirty hours per week for the term.

1. Prior to Exploration Term Registration, see your advisor to discuss Exploration Term projects and spring courses.
2. Exploration Term Registration dates and instructions will be provided by Academic Records in the weeks prior to Registration.
3. All projects meet for Exploration Term orientation on Thursday, November 15, at the Common Hour.
4. All projects meet the first day of Exploration Term, Thursday, January 3, 2013, at 1:00 p.m.

Drop and Add Policy

All Exploration Term course changes must be made by the third day of Exploration Term, Monday, January 7, 2013. A student cannot drop a project without a grade of “W” after the third day of Exploration Term. If a student drops after Monday, January 14, a grade of “F” or “U” will automatically be assigned.

4-1-4- Exchange Program

Many colleges with 4-1-4 calendars take part in a BSC exchange program for the January term. Participating schools include Berea College in Kentucky, Eckerd College in Florida, DePauw University in Indiana, and many more. BSC students wishing to take an Exploration Term course at an affiliated 4-1-4 college may do so without paying additional tuition. Likewise, students from affiliated schools may be eligible to attend BSC with a tuition waiver; the normal charges for room and board apply. The 4-1-4 colleges affiliated with Birmingham-Southern are the following:
