Scholarships and Awards

Honors Day Awards Presented by the Education FacultyEdu Faculty member and student

Each April the college honors outstanding students in each division. The Education Department presents awards in a morning ceremony followed by a campus wide Honors Program. The Rutherford Ray Black Awards and Alabama Consortium Award are announced at the Honors Program. All other awards are announced at the Department program. All awards are based on education faculty recommendation.

The Louise H. Branscomb Scholarship

This scholarship is a merit award presented to a rising senior in education who, as a member of the Teacher Education Program, demonstrates a commitment to teaching youth and a strong desire to develop skills toward that end. The Rutherford R. Black Award for the Most Outstanding Student in Teacher Education

This award is presented to the graduating senior in education who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship, leadership, commitment to education, and teaching ability.

The Alabama Consortium Scholarship

The Alabama Consortium scholarship is given to a Junior in Elementary/Collaborative Education. The student must promise to work in Alabama for one year after graduation. This substantial monetary award is based on faculty recommendation and financial need.

The Phyllis M. Nielsen Senior Book Award for Outstanding Performance in Student Teaching

The Nielsen award is given in honor of Dr. Phyllis M. Nielsen, former education faculty, retired in 1987. This award is presented to graduating seniors who demonstrate outstanding performance in student teaching.

The Kappa Delta Epsilon National Award.

This award is presented to the member of Kappa Delta Epsilon who has demonstrated the most outstanding service to the Beta Chapter at Birmingham-Southern College.

The Bettye J. Poole Senior Award for Excellence in Collaborative Teaching

The Poole award is given in honor of Dr. Bette J. Poole, education faculty member from 1996-1998. This award is presented to the senior in Collaborative Education who demonstrates outstanding performance in working with special needs students.

The Bettye J. Poole Junior Award for Excellence in Collaborative Teaching

This award is presented to the rising junior in Collaborative Education who demonstrates outstanding performance in working with special needs students.

The Bell Teaching Award

The Bell Teaching Award is given in honor of Dr. Bette Kersting Bell, former associate professor in education from 1995-2003. The Bell Teaching Award is given to graduates of the Education Department obtaining a teaching certificate in any of the certification programs at BSC who are employed in a teaching position in the year following graduation.
