Birmingham-Southern’s Teacher Education Program offers a unique undergraduate experience for its candidates. At BSC, education students gain “real world” teaching experience beginning in their first education class. Whether you are observing, teaching, or planning lessons in the schools, you
immediately get a realistic picture of teaching as a profession and are given the opportunity to develop effective teaching skills. However, you don’t do it alone.
In the Department of Education you are taught, advised, and supervised by faculty who have been in the schools and have first-hand knowledge of what works and what doesn’t. Our faculty distills their training, experience, research, and scholarship to provide guidance and direction that can only come with experience.
We offer small, intimate classes that characterize the Birmingham-Southern experience. You know your instructors and are part of an educational community that shares in the larger vision of the liberal arts experience and the preparation for life it offers. We have a commitment to excellence in both our programs and our teacher candidates.
This commitment is reflected in the fact that Birmingham-Southern’s Teacher Education Program has been nationally accredited for more than fifty years by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Our programs are also accredited and approved by the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE).
Certified Teacher Education Programs include: Elementary/Collaborative Education K-6; Secondary Education 6-12; and Dance, Music, and Visual Art Education P-12. For those not interested in certification, we offer the Educational Services major. For those interested in religious education, we offer an interdisciplinary Religion-Education major.
