Edward S. LaMonte, Director of International Programs
Anne Ledvina, Associate Director of International Programs
The Office of International Programs (OIP) serves as the center for international education at Birmingham-Southern College. Based on the belief that international study is a fundamental part of a liberal arts education and that all students should have the opportunity to meet people of other cultures, create friendships, develop language skills, and explore intercultural communication, OIP offers study and work experiences for students and faculty through both independent and group programs abroad. Additionally, in cooperation with faculty, staff, and students, the OIP develops intercultural programming and training for the whole campus. OIP also serves as a resource in advising and support for foreign students.
Birmingham-Southern College has made a commitment to promote international study as a valuable part of the liberal arts education, including many interdisciplinary majors and minors that emphasize international study, such as Asian Studies, International Studies, and Latin American Studies. The Office of International Programs provides students with the opportunity to enhance their studies in any major through study abroad, and has established affiliations with international and North American institutions that provide exchange and scholarship opportunities to Birmingham-Southern students. Credits earned at these affiliated institutions can be transferred back to Birmingham-Southern College toward the fulfillment of the majors, minors, general education and elective requirements. Every student at the College has the opportunity to study abroad for up to one academic year while earning credit toward their degree. For further information about study abroad, intercultural programs, and interdisciplinary majors and minors, please refer to the Office of International Programs Web site at http://www.bsc.edu/academics/special/oip/index.htm.
