SERVICE LEARNING
Rachel Estes, Director of Service Learning
Hess Center for Leadership and Service
Service Learning is one of the distinctive features of Birmingham
Southern College. Coordinated through our Office for Service Learning,
students and faculty have developed an extensive program of service
both locally, nationally, and internationally. Locally, within five
miles of campus, there are 12 ongoing projects for which students
volunteer. In addition, during the fall term, the Office coordinates
Outreach Day, a one day opportunity during which students work in
designated community work projects. During the spring, "Alternative
Spring Break" places students in regional projects of service.
Interim projects in service learning offer committed students the
opportunity to serve and learn in the United States, Africa, Latin
America, and India. Using the gift of education in service to others
has long been a part of Birmingham Southern's mission, and students
are encouraged to become involved. The Office for Service Learning
is a part of the Hess Center for Leadership and Service and is located
on the second floor of the Norton Campus Center.
