Master of Arts in Public and Private Managemen

What are the success factors for the 21st century that enhance your value?

Organizational leaders agree that versatility and the ability to envision possibilities set a plan of action in the midst of chaos are qualities which produce success. Organizations need more than members who adapt to changes. More importantly, they need members who can produce changes within the organization. Organizations need leaders. The MPPM program provides value beyond the business basics of management-marketing-finance. It enables students to become proficient in the following critical success factors:

Entrepreneurship

The MPPM program challenges students to think, to risk, to question. It enables them to advance their perspectives of and approaches to varying situations and experiences. They engage in learning activities that expand the boundaries of their potential.

Leadership

Through the collaborative teaching style in the program, students are able to assume informal leadership roles both inside and outside the classroom. They participate in activities that help them connect theoretical and applied knowledge to the complex problems, issues, and situations of the real world.

"The Master of Arts in Public and Private Management program at Birmingham-Southern College prepares leaders for today and tomorrow - leaders who know leadership is a matter of how to be, not how to do it, and believe that it is the quality and the character of the leader that determines the results.

- Frances Hesselbein, Chairman of the Board of Governors, Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management, New York

Global Perspectives

Students gain an increased awareness of the significance of foreign competition and the potential of international markets. The MPPM program weaves throughout the curriculum the cultural and economic differences of countries comprising the global marketplace.

Teamwork

Engaging in collaborative problem solving with fellow students enables the MPPM participant to build teamwork skills. Students are able to examine assumptions and differing points of view. They learn to work with others to generate creative solutions to complex problems.

Decision Analysis

Students learn how to make decisions that are supported by statistical data rather than guess work. Students will examine theoretical and applied models of data evaluation within organizational settings.

Communications

Understanding the principles and theories of organizational communications and their practical application is crucial for effective leadership within modern organizational settings. The MPPM program is designed to develop leaders who can effectively use and evaluate communications as management tools for more efficient individual and organizational functioning.

Innovation and Creativity

MPPM students learn to approach management situations creatively-"to think outside the box." They learn to view situations from different perspectives, to challenge "status-quo" approaches, and to be aware of the impact of technological and social change within organizations.

Ethics

The MPPM program prepares students to assess decisions, approaches, and solutions in terms of ethical dimensions. The program goes beyond classroom discussions of ethical dilemmas; the teaching and learning process occurs within the framework of an Honor Code.

Strategic and Critical Thinking

Opportunities for problem solving help students develop and demonstrate critical thinking. The MPPM program stresses practical learning. Faculty challenge students to build bridges between the themes and skills they learn in class and the situations they experience at work. The goal is to produce graduates who are effective thinkers, capable of envisioning future directions for their organizations.
