Graduate Certificate in Public and Private Management for International Students

Today’s world is rapidly growing in population, diversity, and interdependence. Tomorrow’s leaders will be those who are internationally minded and prepared to address issues concerning culture, politics, economy, and the environment. These individuals need to know how to relate to and work with people from different countries. The development of cross-cultural understanding and communication is necessary for them to successfully compete in and reap the benefits of a global society.

The Graduate Certificate in Public and Private Management for International Students at Birmingham-Southern College offers a one-year program for professionals with degrees earned outside the United States to learn management concepts and skills from an American perspective.

The curriculum is organized around core courses, an externship, and elective courses. The externship is a twenty hour per week experiential learning opportunity which integrates the student into the American business community. In the immediate area, there are six Fortune 500 companies and five of The 100 Best Companies to Work For in America. Students take two academic courses during each term and complete a three term externship. Students typically receive a stipend for their externship. No more than two and one-third (2 1/3) courses may be carried in any one term. The program of study involves eight courses that may be completed in one year. The electives and externships include options in managerial, legal, health care, and civil/human rights issues.

This graduate certificate program is designed for students whose undergraduate degrees have been earned at foreign colleges and universities. Admission to the program requires a completed application package which includes all official transcripts; scores from either the GMAT, GRE, MAT, MCAT, or LSAT; two letters of recommendation from individuals qualified to comment on the applicant’s academic preparation and competencies; a $25 application fee in U.S. funds; and evidence of English proficiency, in the form of the TOEFL (paper-based total 600 minimum score--computer-based total 213 minimum score) or comparable proof or oral and written ability in English.
