Alabama Tornado Relief
Many are now asking “what can I do?” in the aftermath of the April 27th tornadoes that devastated our communities. Some have even suggested traveling to the affected areas to offer assistance in the recovery efforts. While the desire to act immediately is understandable, traveling impulsively to those areas right now is not recommended and may actually hinder the progress of the trained emergency personnel.
The best way to assist at this particular time is through monetary donations to such groups as the Red Cross or UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). These donations are extremely helpful in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.
Below are some suggested ways to assist:
- Donate to the Birmingham chapter of the Red Cross for the Alabama tornado relief fund – or text “REDCROSS” to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
- Make a contribution to UMCOR here: GBGM-UMC-Donations-Disaster Response, United States.
- Hands on Birmingham has already set up a volunteer group for emergency assistance. Sign up now, and this group will contact you as opportunities arise.
- Donate to an area food bank through the Alabama Food Bank Association.
- Conserve water in the coming days, as requested by the Birmingham Water Works and Sewer Board.
- Give blood through LifeSouth or the Red Cross.
- Donate water, non-perishable foods, hygiene products, and clothes. Receiving bins at Birmingham-Southern are located in Norton by the computer lab on the 2nd floor.

Note: many on this campus have family and/or friends in communities that were heavily damaged. Please be mindful of this in the coming weeks, and take care of each other. For those in need of emotional support during this time, counseling is available through Health Services.
