Prospective Biology Students
We offer a dynamic experience to prepare our graduates for their desired careers. In small classes and labs, students practice science and develop critical thinking skills under the careful guidance of our faculty. In BSC Biology, we take learning beyond the classroom and into the laboratory, the environment, and the workplace.

Pre-health Program
Our pre-health program is exceptionally strong. Our graduates are accepted into professional schools at rates high above the national average (view our data). From day one our pre-health students are advised how to prepare for medical, dental, nursing, or other health careers. Representatives from health professional schools visit frequently to meet with our students. We provide Interim (January term) internships where students shadow health professionals in the workplace. Our Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) works closely with students to develop their best possible applications for medical, dental, nursing and other health professional schools. Our pre-health students participate in our Senior Capstone research experience, and can choose from a variety of international opportunities. We have a popular 3-2 program with Vanderbilt School of Nursing (More) and a partnership with Alabama Medical Education Consortium (More). You can learn more about our pre-health program by visiting BSC Biology's website for our pre-health students.

Research Program
Are you considering a career as a research scientist? Our program is distinctive. Every senior works closely with a faculty member on a cutting-edge research project for two semesters during the Senior Capstone Experience. During the Senior Science Conference our seniors share their findings with the BSC community (view the conference proceedings). Nearly all of our classes emphasize scientific investigation, and many students seek additional training through our Summer Research Associate Program (SRAP) or independent study course credits. Many students have published research papers with faculty (view some of these papers) and presented at scientific conferences. Through these experiences, our pre-health and pre-research students become very strong applicants to professional and graduate schools.
Our Exceptional Learning Environment
We offer all this in our beautiful new $24.1-million state-of-the-art Elton B. Stephens Science Center (view images of our building). While our building is large, you work closely with your professors in labs and classes that are kept small. Finally, our students and faculty maintain a welcoming, non-competitive atmosphere where cooperation, support, and mutual respect, help our students excel.
