Modern Foreign Language Placement

A general discussion of placement at the College can be found at the placement page.

Depending on placement, all students at the College must take one or two units in a non‑native language through one of the following means: 101 and 102; 201 and 220; or one course at the 220‑level or above.

All incoming students who have previously studied a language must take the placement exam for that language, even if they do not intend to continue studying it. Students who have studied a language for more than one year prior to entering the College will not receive general education credit for taking 101 or 102 in that language, unless otherwise approved by the foreign language faculty.

Based on the placement exam and the student’s prior experience, the modern foreign language faculty will determine the appropriate placement. Information about each student’s placement will be provided to advisors prior to registration.

Students should enroll in the required foreign language courses as soon as possible.

For further information on placement in modern foreign languages, visit the modern foreign languages information page, or contact the chair of modern foreign languages, Dominique Linchet (dlinchet@bsc.edu) or any modern foreign language faculty member
