Birmingham-Southern student wins Alabama Symphony Orchestra's composition competition; ASO to premiere work in upcoming concert

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Meghan Ford of Birmingham, a junior music composition major at Birmingham-Southern College, is the winner of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra's "Inspired by Music" student composition competition, with her winning work to be premiered by the ASO in an upcoming concert that will be announced at a later date.Meghan Ford

As part of a fundraiser for the ASO's Concertmaster and Friends Series, students from several area colleges and universities submitted original compositions inspired by four painted violins that were created by area visual artists. Ford's winning composition, "Islands and Inlets" for Violin, Piano, Oboe, and Spoken Word, was inspired by the violin artwork "Polynesian Paradise/Islands and Inlets" by Dr. Lowell Vann.

The announcement of Ford's winning composition was made at a Jan. 26 reception.

Ford, a graduate of the Alabama School of Fine Arts, studies composition with BSC music professor Rebecca Remley and is a Charles Vail College Fellow in music. She participates in the BSC Concert Choir and Hilltop Singers, and also is a teacher at Scrollworks, a non-profit music teaching studio in the community.
